Rhode Island's Document Destruction & Data Security Rules
RI General Laws § 6-52-2 mandates that businesses destroy their customers' personal information "by shredding, erasing, or otherwise destroying and/or modifying" it. The RI Identity Theft Protection Act further expanded these protections, specifically stating that businesses of all sizes, municipal agencies, and even individuals, must protect personal information the same way. Do you have a risk-based information security program in place? If you work with vendors or third-parties, does your contract require them to abide by similar protocols? Do your employees know what to do if a breach occurs? If the answer to any of these questions is "no," or if you are unsure, your business could be in violation of state laws, and could face steep penalties. These extensive regulations can be complicated, but ShredSmart can help.
RI Electronic Waste Recycling Rules
- RI Electronic Waste Law RI's 2007 Electronic Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling Act established recycling requirements for covered electronic products. These products must NOT be disposed of in landfills.
- Covered Electronic Products Electronic products that MUST be recycled include computers/CPUs, monitors, laptops with >9" screens, tablets, and televisions (>9").
- E-Waste from Businesses Equipment manufacturers are financially responsible for recycling their devices sold to individuals and schools, but not to businesses. Businesses are required to make their own arrangements for e-waste recycling.
