Connecticut's Document Destruction & Data Security Rules

For a small state, Connecticut is big on business—many companies in the health insurance industry (among others) call the state home. Just like healthcare facilities, health insurance companies are subject to HIPAA. Passed in 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) mandates safeguards for protected health information. Both physical and electronic records must be kept under lock and key, and securely destroyed when no longer needed.

In addition to the federal laws, CT General Statute § 42-471 provides protection for personal information, and mandates that if your customers' or patients' social security numbers are accessed without authorization, you must offer identity theft protection and mitigation services to them at no cost for 24 months.

CT Electronic Waste Recycling Regulations

Disposal Ban on E-Waste Covered electronic devices that MUST be recycled include televisions, desktop/portable computers, monitors, and printers, as well as certain tablets, e-readers, and phones with >4" screens.

CT Electronic Waste Law CT's 2007 e-waste recycling law established opportunities for households to recycle their residential electronics at the expense of the device manufacturers. This law does not cover devices from non-residential sources.

Regulation of E-Waste from Businesses E-waste from businesses is regulated under federal and state hazardous waste and solid waste laws. Businesses are required to make their own arrangements for e-waste recycling, at their own expense.

Universal waste Rule Used electronics, batteries, lamps, and mercury-containing equipment are waste streams managed as universal waste in CT. There are special requirements for handling, labeling, and storing each of these waste streams.
